By the way;
The Germans are shocked and upset about there being horse meat in ready-made dishes?
And then they eat "Mett" themselves. Raw pork. If there is something I was always told to avoid it was raw pork and raw chicken. I think that is far worse than cooked horses. (OK, I still absolutely think that what is on the label should be what's in the package, so you can make your own choice, and I still don't want to eat meat or anything stuffed with medicines, but still. RAW pork?)
More about mett here on Wikipedia.
And all the people that are now upset about us eating horses.
Don't complain when other people want to avoid certain types of meat or meat from special animals, or meat all together. If you don't want to eat certain types of meat, why should they?
(Again, labeling is a different story)
Just saying.

Strangely enough internet didn't have a good answer about why it's safe to eat mett. I would never eat it if I know what it is...
This link seems to be as good as it gets. (At least without googling in German) It seems like it's all about trusting that the meat has been properly controlled before sold...

We have this exact problem here in Finland, too. Horse meat all over the place.
Even though it's a big deal here now, thankfully it's not even half as bad as it is in England, from what I have heard. They like horses a lot more than we Finns do. But I can still imagine some horse chicks abandoning meat entirely from their dishes for the sake of their animal friends.
I think one of the reasons why the English react so strongly is not because they necessarily love horses more but they don't have the history of eating horse. In Sweden it was relatively common to have sausage made of horse (except not everybody realised it actually was made of horse but that's just because they didn't bother to read the label). Also, the English are nowadays further away where the food is coming from so it is an even bigger shock to them. Maybe they also eat more "TV-dinners". I am not touched by the scandal at all as I don't eat the type of food that was found to contain horse.
Dan: I admit that I tried mett, and I like it, but that the german pork would be so much safer than other pork I don't believe for a second. It is not something I would eat as a regular meal, raw pork just isn't something to recommend... But yes, freezing is a commonly known method to get rid of some issues, but still...
Freezing is a commonly known method, but as far as I can see, there are no requirements of mett that it is freezed, just that it is handled cold.
I know, and I don't trust mett, I really can't see how that can be recommended. But that's what's so strange, the Germans are shocked about things we see as normal and think think things that we see as shocking as perfectly normal.
Regardless though:Food needs to be correctly labeled so that those who don't want to eat a certain thing can avoid that.
